Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet
The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
