Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
A recent study reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
