Senate Greenlights Measure to Release Epstein Files
The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to delay the bipartisan effort involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Congress
The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
The public have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”
Presidential Signature
The bill next goes to Trump for his signature. The president signaled on Monday that he would approve the bill.
Even though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the official management of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Reaction
Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were watching from a public section, broke into applause after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would make public specific data of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
